Former Nintendo of America Director doesn’t believe in Meta’s Metaverse and VR

With its Metaverse, Meta is attempting to advance in virtual reality technology. While companies including Bandai Namco wish to follow suit with their intellectual property metaverse, some in the game industry are skeptical. Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Ame is among many who disagree. Earlier in February 2022, investors inquired about Nintendo’s thoughts on the use of NFT technology and the establishment of a meta-universe.

The former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime spoke with Bloomberg about Facebook’s meta-universe during the South by Southwest 2022 conference in Austin, Texas. His major critique is that Facebook and its parent company, Meta Platforms, have not been an innovative corporation for a long time. Reggie Fils-Aime also added that its success has been primarily due to purchases of startups such as Instagram and Oculus, or to the fact that it has been “fast to follow people’s ideas.” With that economic model and Meta Platforms’ present goals, Fils-Aime is skeptical of the company’s approach to the metaverse.

According to Fils-Aime, the future of the metaverse and digital industry will be driven by smaller enterprises, many of which are still in the early stages of development. As a result, he anticipates that these more creative technology firms will be purchased by major conglomerates looking to carve out a position in the digital future. He also mentioned recent acquisition bids by Take-Two Interactive and Microsoft for Zynga Inc. and Activision Blizzard, respectively.
